Minocycline hydrocholride, also known as minocycline, is in a class of medications called tetracycline antibiotics. Minocycline is used to treat a broad spectrum of bacterial infections. It is used primarily to treat acne and other skin infections. It also used regularly to treat pneumonia and other respiratory tract infections; and infections of the genital and urinary systems. It works by preventing the growth and spread of bacteria.
Minocycline can cause damage and/or permanent and irreversible loss of vision in all ages of patients taking such product, including adolescents. Inflammation around the optic nerve (papilledema) resulting in partial to total blindness.
Pseudeotumor cerebri (benign intracranial hypertension) in adults and adolescents has been associated with the use of tetracyclines. Minocycline has been reported to cause or precipitate pseudotumor cerebri .... Although signs and symptoms of pseudotumor cerebri resolve after discontinuation of treatment, the possibility for permanent injury such as visual loss that may be permanent or severe exists."
